Forum Retreat:
Rethinking Risk
Learn to take risks where opportunity exists.
Overview
Risk is everywhere. And while reducing risk is generally a goal, taking calculated risks is where the big opportunities for growth and success lie. In this program, we explore the nature of risk and our attitudes and assumptions about it that hold us back from big moves. Using rock climbing as a learning context, we’ll explore assessing risks, making smart tradeoffs, and managing risks in real time. This dynamic and experiential approach will transform your understanding and approach to risk and risk-taking.

Program
Agenda
Forum retreats typically run four days in length, allowing a day on either end for travel and two full days of concentrated discussion and experiences that reinforces the retreat's mission.
Day
One
Arrive at your destination, typically a private villa or a wilderness lodge, where your forum group will enjoy a welcoming dinner and toast. After dinner, partake a privately-guided stargazing experience and discuss your intentions for the retreat under the night sky.
Day
Two
Engaging in outdoor experiences often involves a delicate dance with risk, where the thrill of adventure is tempered by a need for safety. Defining risk is the first step, as it allows us to identify potential hazards and uncertainties inherent in any activity. Understanding your risk relationship is equally crucial; it involves recognizing your own abilities, limitations, and comfort zones in the face of uncertainty. Rethinking risk means adopting a mindset that balances caution with a willingness to step outside your comfort zone, where personal growth often resides. Assessing risk entails evaluating the potential consequences of your actions and the likelihood of unfavorable outcomes. Finally, calculating risk involves making informed decisions based on this assessment, which may include precautionary measures like proper gear, training, or the guidance of experienced leaders.
Day
Three
Navigating an outdoor experience demands the ability to manage risk in real-time, a skill that separates a successful adventure from a precarious one. Managing risk in real-time involves making dynamic decisions as conditions evolve, adjusting your course to maintain safety without sacrificing the essence of the adventure. Leveraging risk strategically is also pivotal; it means recognizing when calculated risks can enhance the experience, pushing you to new heights while maintaining a safety net. Mitigating risks is an ongoing effort, encompassing everything from monitoring weather changes to ensuring everyone in the group is adequately equipped and informed. An action plan and well-thought-out strategies are essential tools in any outdoor enthusiast's toolkit, offering a structured approach to handle contingencies and ensure a fulfilling and secure outdoor adventure.
